This state has more than 6,900 units of government, more than any other state. Incumbent Democrat Lindsey LaPointe sees the folly in that and wants to tackle consolidation — of local government, pension funds and school districts. She also is one of a handful of Democrats who have called on Michael Madigan, linked to a federal corruption investigation, to step down from his roles as Illinois House speaker and state Democratic Party chairman. Her opponents in this race: Republican Jeff Muehlfelder, a Chicago police detective who wants to get tougher on crime and help small business owners, and Libertarian candidate Joseph Schreiner.
